Alejandro Cartagena is the artist behind Rivers of Power, one of the 5 projects that form Ciudad de las Montañas by Newwer.

In Ríos de Poder, Alejandro Cartagena reflects on the relevance the Santa Catarina river has over the city of Monterrey. The river, usually left dry after adverse weather conditions, the mistreatment and corruption that permeates across the city’s dynamics and adverse weather conditions, recovers its power and reclaims its space when Monterrey is struck by a meteorological anomaly such as a hurricane.

Alejandro Cartagena was born in Dominican Republic in 1977 but currently resides in Monterrey, Mexico. His photographic work has been showcased in more than 50 individual and group shows including the the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris and it’s part of collections in museums like the San Francisco MOMA and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. He has being recognized with international awards such as the Street Photography Award in London Photo Festival, the Lente Latino Award in Chile and the Photolucida Critical Mass Book Award.

His work using portraits and landscapes as main formats, looks into the environmental and social issues and what makes up the latin american identity over an urban context.
